2024 XIAODUSHE WALL
#重塑边界 #围墙 #乡村建设
This project continues the inquiry from Xiaodushe’s village park: how can rural infrastructure support collective life? The site—a 600-meter boundary wall—once marked the village edge with a blank, crumbling partition. We transformed it into a linear civic space, a “wall-park” that mediates between road and village through porosity and invitation. The design strategy softens an impermeable boundary into an inhabited edge. Through sectional shifts, recesses, and framed openings, the wall introduces moments of pause, transition, and use. Built from reclaimed brick and local materials, it draws on vernacular logic while allowing for spontaneous occupation. Low-tech elements—canopies, niches, and steps—invite ongoing reinterpretation. Rather than impose a fixed form, the wall acts as a framework for participation: a structure that is readable, modifiable, and generous, encouraging villagers to engage with and extend it through everyday use. This is not a finished object, but a framework for participation. Villagers improvise: tying ropes between trees, gathering in shade of the canopy, adapting the space to their rhythms. The wall reflects our core ethos—recasting basic infrastructure as civic opportunity, where even the margin can become a site of connection and care.
